Describe how filtration can be used to seperate sand from water?

You put the mixture through the filter and through the filter paper - because the sand is insoluble, it will stay in the filter paper as the residue. The water particles are small enough to pass through the filter paper - so they will go into the conical flask and they will be the filtrate.
