What is the fundamental definition of Thematic Analysis (TA)?
It is a method used to identify, analyse, and report patterns (themes) within a data set, minimally organising and describing the data in detail
What are the six phases of Thematic Analysis?
1. Familiarisation with data;
2. Generating initial codes;
3. Searching for themes;
4. Reviewing themes;
5. Defining/naming themes;
6. Producing the report
What occurs during the familiarisation phase (Step 1) of TA?
The researcher transcribes the data, reads and re-reads the material, and notes down initial ideas
In TA, what does it mean to generate initial codes (Step 2)?
It involves systematically coding interesting features across the entire data set and collating data relevant to each code in a data-driven fashion
How is a "theme" defined in qualitative research?
A theme is a recurring idea or motif that captures something significant about the data in relation to the research question, representing a patterned meaning
According to Braun & Clarke (2006), what does NOT define a theme?
A theme is not defined by the number of times it appears or the amount of space it takes up, but rather by its importance to the research question
What are the primary strengths of Thematic Analysis?
It is a good starting point for new researchers, suits large data sets, summarises data while retaining richness, and ensures interpretations are supported by data
What are the limitations of Thematic Analysis?
Limitations include concerns about reliability due to varying researcher interpretations, a lack of a single "how to" framework, and the inability to make claims about language use
What is the definition of Content Analysis (CA)?
A research method for making replicable and valid inferences from data to their context to provide knowledge, new insights, and a representation of facts
How does Content Analysis transform large amounts of text?
It summarises and systematises content into categories, which can then be described by counting frequencies or using statistical analysis
What is a "meaning unit" in Content Analysis (Step 2)?
These are words, sentences, or paragraphs that relate to the same central idea and should stay close to the participant's original language
What is the purpose of condensing meaning units (Step 3) in CA?
To shorten the meaning unit while preserving its core meaning and nuance
In Content Analysis, what is the difference between categories and themes?
Categories answer "who, what, when, where" by grouping similar codes; themes answer "why, how, in what way" by expressing underlying (latent) meanings
What does a numerical summary in Content Analysis typically include?
It quantifies the analysis by listing the total number of meaning units, codes, and themes, often showing the percentage distribution of different experience types
Why is Content Analysis described as a non-linear, reflective process?
Researchers are expected to move back and forth between steps, revisiting codes and categories as their understanding of the data evolves
What are some various data types that can be used for Content Analysis?
CA can be applied to text, video, audio, social media content, dating profiles, magazine covers, and photographs
What are the advantages of Content Analysis?
It is low cost, does not require specialised instruments or extensive training compared to interviews, and is applicable to diverse sources
What are the limitations of Content Analysis?
It can over-simplify complex realities into limiting categories and carries a risk of misinterpretation
What is a major difference in numerical reporting between TA and CA?
Thematic Analysis rarely features numerical elements, while Content Analysis often turns codes and themes into numerical elements like percentages
How do TA and CA differ in their depth of coverage?
Thematic Analysis often demonstrates more in-depth coverage, whereas Content Analysis is frequently very descriptive
