Subgrade
The ground or base directly under and supporting the concrete slab.
Sub-base
A thin layer of granular material placed on the prepared sub-grade to improve support.
Tolerances
Acceptable range of deviation in a flat surface of concrete slabs.
Damp Proofing Membrane (Vapour Barrier)
A barrier placed under slabs to prevent moisture loss from concrete and moisture ingress from the ground.
Curing
The process of protecting concrete from rapid drying and damage during initial setting.
Air-entrained Concrete
Concrete that contains tiny air bubbles to improve freeze/thaw resistance and workability.
Screeding
The process of leveling and finishing concrete to achieve a flat surface.
Reinforcement
Steel bars or mesh installed in concrete slabs to prevent cracking and provide structural integrity.
Control Joints
Planned cracks in concrete that allow for expansion and contraction by creating weak points.
Formwork
Temporary structures that hold the wet concrete in place until it hardens.
