Archaeplastida
A major group of eukaryotic organisms that includes red algae, green algae, and land plants, characterized by having primary plastids.
Endosymbiosis
A process where one organism lives inside another, leading to the evolution of organelles such as chloroplasts and mitochondria.
Monophyletic group
A group of organisms that consists of a common ancestor and all its lineal descendants.
Cuticle
A waxy layer that coats the surfaces of land plants, preventing water loss and protecting against UV radiation.
Stomata
Microscopic openings on the surfaces of leaves that allow for gas exchange (CO2 and O2) while minimizing water loss.
Vascular tissues
Tissues that transport water (xylem) and nutrients, as well as sugars (phloem), throughout the plant.
Synapomorphy
A shared derived characteristic that can be used to determine evolutionary relationships among organisms.
Pollen
A fine powder produced by seed plants that contains male gametes, allowing for reproduction without the need for water.
Seeds
Reproductive structures that contain a young plant and a food source, facilitating survival and dispersal.
Anthophyta
A group of flowering plants that produce seeds and fruits, characterized by their unique reproductive structures.
Photosynthesis
The process by which plants convert light energy into chemical energy, producing oxygen and organic compounds.
Fossil record
The history of life as documented by fossilized remains, providing insight into how organisms have changed over time.
Eukarya
A domain of life that includes organisms with complex cells, containing a nucleus and organelles.
Adaptations
Specialized features that enhance the survival and reproductive success of an organism in its environment.
Plastid
An organelle found in plant cells that is involved in the manufacture and storage of food.
