Parotid gland

Located ventrad and craniad of the base of the pinna of the ear, just under the skin

Submaxillary gland

Noted as a roundish mass at the angle of the jaw near the posterior margin of the masseter

Vestibule

Part of the oral cavity lying between the teeth and lips

Hard palate

Anterior portion of the roof of the oral cavity; supported by the premaxillary, maxillary, and palatine bones

Soft palate

Posterior portion of the roof of the oral cavity; lacks bony support

Tongue

Large muscular structure that makes up the floor of the oral cavity

Fungiform papilla

anterior softer portion, covered with minute pointed elevations; mushroom-shaped

Vallate papilla

posterior, elevated, smoother, and harder portion consisting of a round elevation set into a pit; cuplike depressions

Epiglottis

Leaf-shaped structure which projects from the base of the tongue

Pharynx

Portion of the cavity lying posterior and dorsal to the soft palate

Esophagus

Where the pharynx narrows posteriorly guarded by a projecting process, the epiglottis

Larynx

found in the median ventral line posterior to the body of the hyoid; chamber with cartilaginous walls, also called voice box

Lungs

Soft spongy on the pleural sac

Liver

Large lobed generally grayish brown

Gallbladder

large, elongated imbedded in the dorsal surface of the right median lobe of liver

Stomach

large, and rounded organ

Cardia

Part of stomach- area of junction of the stomach and esophagus

Less curvature

Part of stomach- shorter, slightly concave anterior surface of the stomach from the cardia to the pylorus

Greater curvature

Parts of stomach- larger, convex posterior surface

Fundus

Part of stomach- saclike bulge of the stomach to the left of the cardia

Rugae

Part of stomach- Small folds of smooth muscle on the inside of the stomach wall

Duodenum

first portion of small intestine, bound to the liver by the hepatoduodenal ligament; curves abruptly caudad; very long and forms a loop

Jejunum

Beyond the duodenum

Ileum

Remainder part of the small intestine

Mesentery

Coils that accompany the intestine

Caecum

first foot of sacculus rotundus and it is very large

Appendix

last five or six inches of sacculus rotundus

Sacculus rotundus

enlargement at the juncture of the large and small intestine; extends an enormous blind sac, about a foot and a half in length

Pancreas

consists of streaks of gland tissue scattered in the mesentery and situated chiefly along the courses of blood vessels

Spleen

small organ lying along the left side of the stomach

Ascending colon

First part of the colon, rather long and pursues a winding course

Transverse colon

Beyond the ascending colon; runs for a short distance transversely across the peritoneal cavity from right to left

Descending colon

Turns to the left abruptly posteriorly

Rectum

terminal portion of the descending colon

Kidney

large, paired, bean-shaped organs that lie along the dorsal surface of the abdominal cavity on either side of the spine

Urinary bladder

sac occupying the posterior end of the peritoneal cavity, intermediately internal to the body wall and ventral to the large intestine

Ureter

thin tubes lined with smooth muscles

Urethra

empties into the urogenital sinus and drains to the exterior through the urogenital opening

Clitoris

shallow depression along the mid-ventral line of the vaginal opening
