Kidney Functions
Has two major responsibilities: osmoregulation and excretion.
Kidney Failure
The accumulation of toxins in the bloodstream without being maintained by solute concentrations at a stable level. Kidney failure can cause the bearer to feel ill and ultimately deadly if left untreated.
Kidney Transplant
A patient’s failing kidney can be transplanted with a compatible donor. Donors can survive with just one kidney.
It’s crucial that both the patient and donor have the same blood type so the kidney does not reject the recipient’s immune system.
Hemodialysis
Blood can be pumped through a machine to remove waste from a patient. It can last up to 4h and has to be performed multiple times a week (~3x).
