Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)
Infections that are primarily transmitted through sexual contact, including HIV, syphilis, and gonorrhoea.
HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)
A virus that attacks the immune system, leading to AIDS and making the body vulnerable to other infections.
Antiretrovirals (ARVs)
Medications used to treat HIV/AIDS that can prolong a person's life but do not cure the infection.
Syphilis
A bacterial infection caused by Treponema pallidum that can have life-threatening effects if left untreated.
Gonorrhoea
A bacterial infection caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae that infects the mucous membranes of the reproductive system.
Active Immunity
Immunity that occurs when the body produces its own antibodies in response to exposure to a pathogen.
Passive Immunity
Temporary immunity that is acquired by receiving antibodies from another individual.
Pathogen
Any organism, such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, or protozoa, that causes an infectious disease.
Antibiotic
A type of medicine prescribed to kill or inhibit the growth of bacteria.
Vaccine
A medicine designed to prompt the body to produce antibodies against specific pathogens.
Opportunistic Diseases
Infections that occur more frequently in individuals with weakened immune systems, such as those with AIDS.
Contraception
Methods used to prevent pregnancy from occurring.
ABC Approach
A strategy for preventing STIs which stands for Abstain, Be faithful, and Use condoms.
Symptoms of Gonorrhoea in Women
Burning during urination, yellow vaginal discharge, and abdominal pain.
Symptoms of Gonorrhoea in Men
Burning during urination and thick yellow discharge from the urethra.
Immunization
A process that increases a person's defense against infections, often through vaccines.
Antibody
A specific protein produced by the immune system in reaction to antigens, helping to neutralize pathogens.
