Wind
The movement of air from areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure.
Coriolis Effect
A force that makes things moving on Earth (like air, ocean currents, or even airplanes) seem to curve instead of going straight caused by the earth’s rotation.
High Pressure Area
A large body of circulating air with high pressure at its center and lower pressure outside of the area.
Low Pressure
A large body of circulating air with low pressure at its center and higher pressure outside of the area.
Trade Winds
Steady winds that flow from east to west between 30° N latitude and 30° S latitude.
Westerlies
Steady winds that flow from west to east between latitudes 30° N and 60° N, and latitudes between 30° S and 60° S.
Polar Easterlies
Cold winds that blow from the east to the west near the North Pole and South Pole.
Weather
The atmospheric conditions, along with short-term changes, of a specific place at a specific time.
Humidity
The amount of water vapor in the air.
Relative Humidity
The amount of water vapor in the air compared to the maximum amount of water vapor the air could contain at that temperature.
Dew Point
The temperature at which air is saturated and condensation can occur.
Stratus Clouds
Flat, white blankets of clouds that hang low in the sky, sometimes even touching the ground as fog up to 2000 meters.
Cumulus Clouds
Puffy, white clouds that look like cotton balls or cauliflower found from 2000-6000 meters.
Cirrus Clouds
Long, thin, wispy strands of ice crystals high in the sky above 6000 meters.
Air Mass
Large bodies of air that have uniform temperature, humidity, and pressure.
Fronts
A boundary between two air masses.
