Diffusion
The net movement of solutes from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration, down a concentration gradient, until equilibrium.
Solute
The substance dissolved in a solvent; components of a solution other than the solvent.
Solvent
The substance in which solutes are dissolved; in biology, usually water.
Concentration gradient
A difference in the concentration of a solute between two regions; diffusion occurs down this gradient.
Common solutes
Salts (e.g., NaCl), sugars (e.g., glucose), amino acids, and gases (e.g., O2, CO2) dissolved in a solvent.
