Properties of Solids
Many properties of solids are determined by the strength of intermolecular forces (IMFs) present.
Distillation
A separation technique based on differences in boiling points of substances.
Covalent Network Solids
Solids held together by covalent bonds in a large network, e.g., diamond and graphite.
Ionic Solids
Solids made up of oppositely charged ions held together by ionic bonds.
Metallic Solids
Solids in which metal atoms are held together by metallic bonds.
Polymers
Large, chain-like molecules with high molecular weight formed through covalent bonds.
Molecular Solids
Solids made of molecules or atoms held together by IMFs, typically softer with lower melting points.
Hydrogen Bonding
A strong type of dipole-dipole attraction that occurs between molecules with hydrogen attached to electronegative atoms.
Electrostatic Attractions
Forces that hold ionic solids together, described by Coulomb's Law.
Molar Mass
The mass of one mole of a substance, expressed in grams per mole.
