DEPTH PERCEPTION
the ability to perceive the world in three dimensions.
MONOCULAR CUES (PICTORIAL DEPTH CUES)
cues for perceiving depth based on one eye.
Interposition
object that is blocked by another object is perceived to be farther away
Linear perspective
tendency for parallel lines to converge and the closer lines are perceived to be farther away
Relative size
when objects that people expect to be of a certain size appear small, they are judged to be farther away
Texture gradient
texture becomes finer and smaller with distance; when you can see less details you perceive it to be farther away
Aerial perspective
objects that are farther away appear hazier; related to the particles in the air
Motion parallax
speed difference of objects that are close move faster and objects that are far move slower
Convergence
rotation of the eyes to focus on a single object
Binocular disparity
eyes don’t see the same image because of their distance from each other
