New cards

Epithelial tissue

composed of layers of closely packed cells. Has functions of covering exposed surfaces, lining internal pathways and chambers providing physical protection. Also produces specilised secretions by forming secretory glands. Includes epithelia and glands (endocrine and exocrine).

2
New cards

Connective tissue

comprised of cells loosly packed within the extracellular matrix. it fills internal space and specilises in providing structural support, transporting fluids/ dissolving materials, defending the body from invading microorganisms and storing energy.

3
New cards

types of connective tissue

1) connective tissue proper ( loose and dense)

2) fluid connective tissues ( blood and lymph)

3) supporting connective tissues (cartilage and bone).

4
New cards

connective tissue proper (loose) types

1) areolar tissue

2) adipose tissue

3) recticular tissue.

5
New cards

connective tissue proper (dense)

1) dense regular

2) dense irregular

3) elastic.

6
New cards

supporting connective tissues (cartilage)

1) hyaline cartilage

2) elastic cartilage

3) fibrocartilage

7
New cards

muscle tissue

comprised of elongated, excitable cells. known as active tissue it is the most common tissue. it contracts to produce movement, includes skeletal muscles, cardiac muscles and smooth muscles.

8
New cards

muscle tissue (skeletal)

moves the body be pulling on the bones of the skeleton

9
New cards

muscle tissue (cardiac)

contractions move blood within the heart and through blood vessels.

10
New cards

muscle tissue ( smooth)

contractions move fluids and solids along the digest tract and regulate the diameter of small arteries, among others.

11
New cards

nervous tissue

highly specilised but less common. specilised to conduct electrical impulses from one region of the body to the other carrying information. nervous tissue contains two types of cells; neurons, and specilised kinds of supporting cells, collectively called neuroglia.

12
New cards

ratio of tissue

muscle tissue makes up 50%, connective tissue makes up 45%, epithelial tissue is 3% and nervous tissue makes up 2%.
