Psychological Health Problems
Can affect anyone and every aspect of life, but humans are resilient and can develop skills to cope, adapt, and thrive.
Mind-Body Connection
An important link in overall health and well-being, influencing how one feels and thinks about themselves and their environment.
Abraham Maslow
Human theorist who, in the 1960s, developed a hierarchy of needs to describe basic human needs that must be met for psychological health.
Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs (lower levels)
Physiological needs (water, food, shelter), safety needs, social needs, and esteem needs, which must be met before addressing higher-level needs.
Psychological Health
A complex interaction of the mental, emotional, social, and spiritual dimensions of health, existing on a continuum.
Mental Health (WHO definition)
A state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realize their abilities, learn well and work well, and contribute to their community.
Emotional Control
The ability to interpret and respond to one's own emotions.
Adequate Social Support (college students)
Associated with higher GPAs, less stress and depression, less peer pressure for binge drinking, lower rates of suicide, and higher overall life satisfaction.
Optimal Psychological Well-being
Achieved when mental, emotional, social, and spiritual components of health are all thriving.
Personality
Shaped by combinations of traits, behaviors, and emotions.
The 'Big 5' Personality Traits
Openness, Conscientiousness, Extroversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism.
Mindset
Drives and shapes all that an individual does, including how they engage with others and behave in every moment and situation.
Personality and Mindset Interplay
A dynamic relationship where they can influence and shape each other over time.
PERMA
An acronym representing five elements critical to well-being: Positive Emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Achievement.
Characteristics of Emotional Intelligence
Self-awareness, self-management, internal motivation, empathy, and social skills.
Self-esteem
Refers to one's realistic sense of self-respect or self-worth.
Self-efficacy
Describes one's confidence in themselves to successfully engage in and complete a task or behavior.
Emotional Intelligence
The ability to identify, use, understand, and manage one's own emotions as well as those of others in positive and constructive ways.
Altruism
The giving of oneself out of genuine concern for others, selflessly, a key aspect of a spiritually healthy lifestyle.
Mental Illnesses (DSM-5)
Disorders that disrupt thinking, feelings, moods, and behaviors, impairing daily functioning, with persistent cases potentially becoming debilitating.
Causes of Mental Illnesses
Believed to be caused by a variety of biochemical, genetic, and environmental factors.
Coping Strategies for Feeling Trapped
Allowing oneself to feel emotions, using coping skills, trying to be social, and connecting with resources for help.
Treatment for Mental Illnesses
Often a combination of different types due to the complex interplay of biochemical, genetic, and environmental causes.

Making them feel heard and acknowledging their suffering without shame or dismissal.
