Alliteration
Repetition of the same sound at the beginning of several words in a sequence
Allegory
A story/poem/picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning, typically a moral or political one
Anaphora
Repetition of a word/phrase at the beginning of successive clauses
Antistrophe
Repetition of the same word or phrase at the end of successive clauses
Antithesis (?)
Opposition, or contrast of ideas or words in a balanced or parallel construction
Aphorism (?)
A pithy observation that contains a general truth. "If it ain't broke don't fix it."
colloquialism (?)
the use of slang or informalitiles in speech or wiritng. Not accceptable for formal writing.
Connotation vs. Denotation
Connotation: A words implied meaning
Dennotation: A words literal meaning
Child vs. Child & Home vs. Home
Diction (?)
Related to style, refers to the writer's word choices, especially with regard to corectness, clearness or effectigveness. EX: Concrete, abstract, formal, informal
Euphemism
A substitution of agreeable or atleast non-offensive expression for one whose plainer meaning might be unpleasant. EX: Passed away instead of died
Hyperbole
Exaggeration for emphasis or for rhetorical effect his brain is the size of a pea.
Imagery
Sensory details or figurative language used to describe, arouse emotion or represent abstractions.
Metaphor
Implied comparison achieved through a figurative use of words: the word is used not to its literal sense, but in one analogous to it.
Metonymy (?)
Substitute one word for another whcih it suggests. EX: The pen is mightier than the sword
Synecdoche (?)
Understanding one thing with another: the use of a part for the whole or the whole for the part. EX: The word "sails" is often used to refer to a whole ship
Onomatopoeia
Use of words to imitate natural sounds, accomodation of sound to sense. EX: Click, mumble
Oxymoron (?)
Paradox acchieved by the juxaposition of words which seems to contradict one another.
Personification
atribution of personality to an impersonal thing. EX: The party died down
Repetition
duplication such as a sound, word, phrase, or clause or grammatical pattern

a comparison between two things using like or as
Wit (?)
Intellectually amusing language that suprises and delights.
