Main idea: Factions (groups with shared interests) are dangerous, but a large republic controls them best.
Key points:
Factions are unavoidable (people have different opinions, wealth, beliefs).
The biggest danger = majority faction that harms minority rights.
You can’t remove factions without destroying freedom → instead, control their effects.
A large republic works best because:
More people = more diverse views
Harder for one faction to dominate
Representatives filter extreme ideas

Main idea: Government must control itself through checks and balances.
Key points:
“Ambition must be made to counteract ambition”
Each branch (legislative, executive, judicial) has separate powers
Checks and balances prevent any branch from becoming too powerful
Protects individual liberty
Also mentions federalism (national vs state power)

Main idea: It is justified to break unjust laws through nonviolent protest.

Distinguishes:

Supports civil disobedience to create change
