Anaerobic Respiration
A type of respiration that occurs without oxygen, resulting in the production of byproducts like ethanol or lactic acid.
Glycolysis
The multistep breakdown of glucose to pyruvate, common to both aerobic and anaerobic respiration.
Fermentation
A process that anaerobes use to reduce pyruvate, converting it into products like CO2 and ethanol or lactic acid.
Citric Acid Cycle (Krebs Cycle)
A phase of aerobic respiration where pyruvate is converted to CO2 and water.
ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate)
The energy currency of the cell, produced in greater quantities during aerobic respiration compared to glycolysis.
Saccharomyces cerevisiae
A species of yeast used in both baking and alcohol production, capable of anaerobic respiration.
Carbohydrate Treatments
Different carbohydrate solutions used to study their effects on yeast respiration rates in experiments.
Meniscus
The curved upper surface of a liquid in a test tube or pipette, measured to track the volume of gas produced.
Fermentation Chambers
Devices created using trimmed pipettes to contain yeast and carbohydrate solutions for observing fermentation rates.
Linear Trendline
A straight line that best represents the data points in a scatter plot, used for estimating respiration rates.
