Cornea
The clear tissue that covers the front of the eye
Sclera
white part of the eye
Scleral icterus
yellowing of the sclera due to jaundice
Conjunctiva
Delicate membrane lining the eyelids and covering the eyeball.
EOM intact
extra-ocular movements intact
PEERL
Pupils are equal, round, and reactive to light
Internal stye
painful, red bump located inside the eyelid caused by an infection of the oil glands in the eyelid.
External stye
painful, red bump located inside the eyelid caused by an infection of an eyelash hair follicle
Subconjunctival hemorrhage
red spot on your eye caused by a broken blood vessel
Corneal abrasion
a scratch to the surface of the cornea of the eye, because you can't visualize the cornea of the eye with your naked eye, a fluorescein exam is needed to diagnose a corneal abrasion
Eyelid eversion
"flipping" the upper and lower eyelid when examining a patient's eye to assess the health of the palpebral conjunctiva
Ptosis
also known as drooping. It is when the eyelid droops over the eye. May result from damage to the nerve that controls the muscles of the eyelid, problems with the muscle strength (as in myasthenia gravis), or from swelling of the lid.
How to indicate position of corneal abrasion after performing eye exam
Since the eye resembles the shape of a clock, the position of a corneal abrasion or any other finding in the fluorescein exam is indicated in relation to the clock hands. Example: 0.6 cm abrasion was noted at 3 o'clock position.
Proparacaine
eye anesthetic to numb eye during fluorescein exam
Fluorescein
range dye that comes in a strip and is used to stain the eye to assess for injuries in the eye that are not visible to the naked eye.
Wood's lamp
use in conjunction with fluorescein. This light that uses ultraviolet light and makes fluorescein emit green color.
Visual acuity test
eye exam that checks how well you see the details of a letter or symbol from a specific distance. Documented by the nurse in the section where the vital signs go
Conjunctivitis
also known as pink eye
Glaucoma
eye condition that leads to vision loss if complicated and usually due abnormally high pressure in your eye.
