Parts of a dental bur (3)
Head: Contains the cutting blades or the bur
Neck: Connects head and shank
Shank: Is inserted into the handpiece

Burs can be made from various materials, such as
Steel, Carbide, Diamond, Ceramic

Diamond bur grit sizes: The finer the grit, the _ number in microns.
lower
*diamond burs cause a larger smear layer than carbide burs

Carbide bur grit sizes: The finer the grit, the _ number of blades.
higher
(less blades = more coarse)
Intraoral carbide and diamond burs come in two different shank types
friction grips (FG) and right angle latch (RA)

High-speed handpiece
1:5, Friction grip burs, 1.6 mm shank, 500-200,000 rpm, torque 0.7 Ncm
1:5 (red band) speed-increasing handpiece, it multiplies the motor’s speed by 5
ex: 30,000 rpm x 5 = 150,000 rpm MAX
Slow-speed handpiece
1:1, Right-angle latch burs, 2.35 mm shank, 60-40,000 rpm, torque 3.5 Ncm
Friction grip (FG/FGSS) burs
Used in high-speed handpieces, 1.6 mm shank diameter, Gear ratio: 1:5
Right-angle latch (RA) burs
Used in slow-speed handpieces, 2.35 mm shank diameter. Gear ratio: 1:1
