Athletic trainer

A person who has graduated with a masters degree and who may or may not be state licensed or nationally certified. They are primarily concerned with preventing and treating athletic injuries and providing rehabilitative services to athletes. They may also be responsible for teaching proper nutrition, assessing an athlete's physical condition, giving advice on exercises, and taping or padding players to protect body parts from injury.

Disability

Partial or complete loss of function to an extremity or damage to a part of the nervous system that may affect normal body movement and the ability to function in the daily environment.

Exercise physiologist

Health care technician responsible for designing a physical activity program that is tailored to the specific needs of the individual participant.

Occupational therapist

Works under the direction of the physical therapist and is responsible for assisting with patient care and performing selected treatments such as ultrasound.

Practitioner

A person who, where permitted by law, is responsible for the evaluation, treatment, preventive care, and consultation of patients requiring his or her experience or expertise.

Recreational therapy aide

A person who is generally trained on the job and works under the direct supervision of the recreational therapist; responsible for carrying out activities the recreational therapist has assigned.

Recreational therapist

A therapist who uses recreation and leisure activities as a means of treating patients' symptoms and thereby improving their physical and mental well-being by planning of activities for the patient and then evaluating the patient's progress. Graduates from either a two-year associate of arts program or a four-year bachelor of science program, and state licensure varies according to type of employment.
