RBC color

clots

debris and matter

lipemia

What are the 4 main components you can get from whole blood?

RBCs, platelets, FFP, cryo

4
New cards

What are the temperature requirements for shipping of blood products?

WBC/RBC

Platelets, thawed cryo, granulocytes

frozen components (FFP, PF24, cyro, FRBCs)

WBC/RBC: shipped at 1-10, six or less bags need a gel pack

Platelets, thawed cryo, granulocytes: shipped at 20-24

frozen components (FFP, PF24, cyro, FRBCs): shipped on dry ice

Before WB or RBCs can be placed into general inventory of the receiving facility, the transfusion service must reconfirm what testing?

ABO must be retyped, if Rh negative then retype D (don't have to repeat Rh +, don't have to do weak D)

What is the difference between regular platelets and PR platelets?

PR platelets are treated with UV light and psoralen. This reduces transfusion transmission risk of a broad spectrum of pathogen, replaces the need for bacterial testing, and eliminates the need for gamma irradiation for prevention of TA-GVHD.

Bag is 2.8 inches longer than conventional bags which allows for greater surface area for platelet gas exchange.

7
New cards

What are the advantages of PR platelets

- Substantially reduce risk of bacterial and other pathogenic contamination

- No need for irradiation or CMV testing

- Longer shelf life than conventional or LVDS platelets (1 day)

- Ready to use with no secondary testing required

8
New cards

PR platelets are also known as what?

Psoralen treated platelets, pathogen reduced (PR) platelets, pathogen reduced treated (PRT) platelets

9
New cards

Platelets can be without agitation for up to ____ hours during shipping.

24 hours
