Type of War: Chinese Civil War
The Chinese Civil War was a civil war fought between the GMD (Nationalists) and the CCP (Communists) from 1927–49. It included conventional battles and guerrilla tactics, with phases of cooperation during the Second Sino-Japanese War.

Guerrilla Warfare (CCP Advantage)
The CCP used guerrilla tactics especially during their early resistance and in rural bases like Yanan. These tactics helped them survive despite being militarily weaker and allowed them to win support in the countryside.
3
New cards
Conventional Warfare (GMD Focus)
The GMD relied on traditional military strategies and direct confrontation. Their poorly trained and corrupt officers, however, often lost to the CCP’s more mobile and disciplined forces.

Technological Developments
The war featured basic weaponry and limited mechanization. Both sides made use of Japanese leftovers after WWII, but neither developed significant air or naval warfare. The lack of advanced technology emphasized human resources and tactics.

New cards
Mobilization of Human Resources
The CCP effectively mobilized the rural population by involving them in administration, education, and local militias. The GMD relied on forced conscription, which led to low morale and desertions.
6
New cards
Mobilization of Economic Resources
The CCP implemented land reforms and self-sufficient practices in liberated areas. In contrast, the GMD economy collapsed due to inflation, corruption, and mismanagement, weakening their war effort.

New cards
CCP Discipline and Morale
The CCP enforced strict discipline through codes of conduct for the Red Army. Their forces were respectful to civilians, which increased support. In contrast, GMD troops were often abusive, reducing popular support.

Foreign Involvement – USSR
The USSR helped the CCP indirectly by giving them access to Manchuria and abandoned Japanese weapons after WWII. However, Stalin was cautious and did not provide direct aid.
9
New cards
Foreign Involvement – USA
The USA supported the GMD with military aid and advisors, but was frustrated by GMD corruption and inefficiency. This aid failed to change the war’s outcome.

Geography and Territory
The CCP controlled rural, mountainous, and later northern areas like Manchuria, which gave them strategic depth. The GMD lost territory steadily due to weak governance and military defeats.
