1
New cards

What is a field of science?

Biology, Chemistry, Astronomy, and Geology

2
New cards

What is not a field of science?

Astrology, Phrenology, Superstition,

3
New cards

What is chemistry and how does it relate to you?

The study of the composition and structure of materials and the changes they undergo.

Chemistry supplies our power sources, fuel, medication, drinking water, batteries, crops, etc.

4
New cards

Explain what makes something a science.

Two things:
1) Scientists use old knowledge to gain new knowledge.
2) Science increases understanding of the world and how things work.

5
New cards

Explain and give examples of theories and laws (Big Bang, Molecular Clock, etc.).

Theories:
A set of ideas that attempts to explain why things happen the way they do in the natural world.
1) Big Bang theory
2) Atomic Theory
3)Evolution Theory

Law:
A generalization that describes a variety of behaviors in nature, but does not attempt to explain what does and will happen.
1) Gravity
2)Planetary motion.

6
New cards

Define and identify characteristics of matter.

Anything that has mass and volume, and takes up space, including objects you can see and gases that you cannot see.

7
New cards

Know and be able to use the measurements of matter: volume, length, mass, and density.

See 1.04 guided notes

8
New cards

Identify examples of kinetic and potential energy.

kinetic: a bike speeding down hill.
Potential: a bike at the top of a hill.

9
New cards

Categorize and identify the forms of energy: thermal, nuclear, radiant, etc.

thermal: has to deal with the movement of kinetic energy
