Order of Operations
The sequence of operations to solve expressions: Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division (left to right), Addition and Subtraction (left to right).
Function Notation
The notation f(x)
represents the output of function f
for the input x
.
Slope
The measure of the steepness of a line, calculated as m = (y₂ - y₁) / (x₂ - x₁)
.
Slope-Intercept Form
The equation of a line in the form y = mx + b
, where m
is the slope and b
is the y-intercept.
Parallel Lines
Lines that have the same slope and never intersect.
Perpendicular Lines
Lines that intersect at a right angle, with slopes that are negative reciprocals of each other.
Mean
The average value of a data set, calculated by dividing the sum of all values by the number of values.
Median
The middle value in a data set when the numbers are arranged in ascending order.
Mode
The value that appears most frequently in a data set.
Range
The difference between the highest and lowest values in a data set.
Standard Deviation
A measure of the amount of variation or dispersion in a set of values.
Growth Function
An exponential function represented as y = a(1 + r)^t
.
Decay Function
An exponential function represented as y = a(1 - r)^t
.
Axis of Symmetry
A vertical line that divides a parabola into two symmetrical parts, given by the formula x = -b/(2a)
.
Quadratic Function Standard Form
The form of a quadratic function expressed as y = ax^2 + bx + c
.
Literal Equations
Equations that require solving for a specific variable in terms of others.
System of Equations
A set of two or more equations with the same variables.
Solution of a System
The point(s) where the equations intersect; can be one solution, no solution, or infinitely many.
Graphing Linear Functions
Plotting a straight line that represents a linear equation on a coordinate plane.
Checking Solutions
Verifying the solution of an equation by substituting back into the original equation.
Word Problems
Problems that require translating written phrases into mathematical equations.
