What is the relationship between Chinese painting and ink painting in the Muromachi period? Give two examples.

The Japanese utilized China’s technique in atmospheric perspective through the use of fading ink to emulate mist, as well as a monochromatic color pattern using tones to create highlights and shadows. When we look at Splashed Ink Landscape by Toyo, we can see a gradient ink fade away giving off the illusion of mist in the landscape. Also in this painting, Toyo uses dark tones of ink to show that part of the landscape that is closer to us, and lighter ink in parts that are further away or hidden in the mist.

What characterizes Momoyama period byobus? Give two examples.

The byobus during the Momoyama period are characterized by their use of vibrant colors and gold leaf to reflect their new power through art. The Flowers, Birds, and Insects byobu showcases the 4 season with seasonal vegetation and wildlife, made with attributes of gold to visually symbolize qualities of paradise. In Arrival of the Southern Barbarians, we can see bold colors that contrast from the ocean and Portuguese side of the screen to the Japanese market on the right side of the screen that represents a difference in people and change.

How did humanist and classical ideals manifest in the visual arts? Give two examples.

Humanist and classical ideals manifested in the visual arts through a new focus on the natural world, linear perspective, and mimesis. With the sculpture of David, we can see his contrapposto stance which is revived from Roman sculptural traditions and shows human form. In Christ Giving the Keys to St. Peter, we can see the use of linear perspective through the floor tiles and monuments in the background. It is also important to recognize the people in the foreground and background that have the correct proportions to where they are standing in the scene.

How did High Renaissance painters build on artistic innovations from the Early Renaissance? Give two examples.

High Renaissance built on artistic innovations from the Early Renaissance through their different responses to the natural world, more movement and dynamism, grandeur size, and perfection of linear perspective. We can see in the Last Supper that while the room is drawn in linear perspective, there is also perfect order and proportion in all the groups of 3-4 men. In Madonna of the Rocks, we see the light used to convey naturalism in the scene and a pyramidal formation of the subjects which is the most stable shape.

How did Northern Renaissance artists convey moralizing concepts in largely secular scenes? Give two examples.

The Northern Renaissance was during an era of Protestant Reformation, so the art cautioned against sin. When looking at the Peddler, we can see just an ordinary man, but behind him shows moral perils and pleasures of the everyday world representing temptation and choice. Looking at the Witches’ Sabbath is all types of wrong from the immodest poses of the witches, burning children’s flesh to make their flying unguent, and making offerings to Satan. This story and depiction show the consequences of acting wrongly.

What are the symbols that confer royal identity in Benin? Give two examples.

The mudfish is a symbol meant to represent transformation and power, and coral beads were used to represent the deadly power of the Oba, who was of high rank in Benin. The Wall Plaque depicting the Oba with the Legs of a Mudfish uses mudfish as the legs and feet of the Oba, which shows the Oba’s ability to live in 2 states, as the Oba could. Also, on the Oba in this brass structure, are coral bead rings around his neck tied together with elephant hair meant to represent his strength and power to the community.
