Part of the Compromise of 1850 that required the return of runaway slaves to their owners.
States' Rights
The belief that states have rights that the federal government cannot infringe upon, often used to justify secession.
Sharecropping
A system where landowners rented land to poor farmers in exchange for a share of the crops produced.
Reconstruction Amendments
The 13th (abolished slavery), 14th (granted citizenship), and 15th (voting rights) amendments aimed to extend rights to African Americans.
Battle of Galveston
A significant conflict where the Confederacy recaptured the port of Galveston from Union forces.
Battle of Sabine Pass
An important Confederate victory that prevented a Union invasion of Texas.

The last battle of the Civil War, which took place after the war had officially ended.
