Truth vs. Honesty
The ethical tension between telling the truth (accuracy) and maintaining honesty (avoiding deceit); dilemmas arise when one can be technically true but still misleading.
Lying
Direct falsehoods; stating something that isn’t true.
Misleading
Telling the truth but leaving out context, which can create a false impression.
False Impressions
Allowing others to believe something untrue, even if you do not lie outright.
Creating False Impressions
Actively signaling or implying untrue beliefs, even if what you say isn’t technically false.
Conflicts of Interest
When personal interests interfere with professional duty.
Withholding information
Not disclosing information that others need to make fair decisions.
Divulging information
Sharing confidential information improperly.
Taking Unfair Advantage
Exploiting a situation or someone’s lack of knowledge; unethical when it abuses unequal power or information.
Insider trading
Trading stocks based on non-public information, giving an unfair advantage.
Personal Decadence
Failing to live up to responsibilities due to laziness, indulgence, or apathy.
Interpersonal Abuse
Using position or power to mistreat others; examples include harassment and bullying.
Administrative Dilemmas
Misusing official resources or authority; examples include falsifying expense reports and using company time for personal projects.
Professional Ethics Breaches
Violating the standards of one’s profession; examples include revealing client secrets or prescribing unnecessary medications for profit.
