Burr v Jefferson
Strange occurrence, Jefferson and Burr tied; HOR has a vote but Hamilton needed to choose.
Hamilton chooses Jefferson as president, burr wins V.P.
12th amendment made: president and vice president run on ticket.
Adam’s angry
John adams angry for his loss signed the “judiciary act of 1801” which created new positions for federal judiciary (more judges appointed by Federalist Party). These were called midnight judges.
James Madison gets sued by a midnight judge.
“Marbury v Madison” 1803
Judiciary act of 1801 ruled unconstitutional.
Supreme Court establish the power of judicial review.

In Jefferson’s Inauguration address quote “we are all federalists, we are all republicans”
Jefferson’s biggest accomplishment is the Louisiana expansion. Jefferson sent an ambassador to purchase New Orleans from France (napoleon).
Jefferson wants to buy New Orleans for 10 mil but buys the entire Louisiana territory from France for 15 mil.
France sold cheap because they needed money to fight the war, it was a burden, and they had lost Haiti.

America’s economy revolved around international trade. It was also the source of money problems early in American history.
a. Impressment (kidnapping American sailors and forcing them to fight in British navy)
b. France “IMPERIAL DECREES”: cannot trade with England.
c. England “ORDERS OF COUNCIL”: cannot trade with France.

U.S Chesapeake Incident
Because England was fighting against Napolean,they needed more sailors in their navy.
In 1807, British vessel “the leapord” killed three Americans and wounded 18 other on the Chesapeake in a botched kidnapping.
The people cried for war because of this but Jefferson did NOT want war so he stopped trading with England.

In order to prevent further conflict Jefferson passed this act
Made trade with England illegal
New England merchants and southern tradesmen were negatively affected; their source of income was cut off.
From 1807-1808 u.s exports fell from 108 mil to 22 mil.
Jefferson gets heavily criticized.

James Madison wins the presidency 1808
Tecumseh - a shawnee leader who rallied Indian natives to oppose the u.s invasion westward.
U.S gov sends out a military brigade(William Henry Harrison) to defeat tecumseh n the natives.
Harrison defeated tecumseh in the “Battle of Tipicanoe”
British had supplied Tecumseh with weapons and ammunition; therefore u.s declared war on Britain.
War on Britain
Harrison invaded British Canada and defeated the British at “Ths battle of Thames”.
After British finished fighting France, they were able to concentrate on the war with the u.s.
Slowly invaded through British Canada and burned down the capitol (White House in DC)
France’s Scott kee wrote the star spangled banner.
Andrew Jackson defeats the British soundly at “the battle of New Orleans” he becomes a national hero.
Hartford convention
A delegation from five New England states met in Hartford to denounce the “ruinous war”.
Federalists hate the war.
They seem/appear as traitors.
End of the Federalist Party.
Treaty of Ghent
Ended the war with England.
All lands that were stolen were returned to pre war owners.
A huge boost in patriotism
Time period of an era of “good feelings”.
