Overall goal
Capture sunlight energy to make ATP and NADPH.
Location
Thylakoid membrane.
Reactants
Light, H₂O, ADP + Pi, NADP⁺
Products
ATP, NADPH, O₂
Role of Light and Pigments Photons
Light particles excite electrons in pigments.
Role of Light and Pigments Pigments
Chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, carotenoids absorb light energy.
Photosystem II Function
Absorbs light → excites electrons.
Photosystem II Splitting of water
H₂O → 2H⁺ + ½ O₂ + 2e⁻ (provides electrons to replace excited ones)
Photosystem II Electron Transport Chain (ETC)
Electrons pass through proteins → pump H⁺ into thylakoid lumen.
Photosystem II ATP Synthase
Uses H⁺ gradient to make ATP (chemiosmosis).
Photosystem I Function
Absorbs light → excites electrons → electrons reduce NADP⁺ → NADPH.
Photosystem I Relationship to PSII
PSI receives electrons from PSII via ETC.
