National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS)
Standards established by the EPA to protect public health and the environment from air pollution.
Prevention of Significant Deterioration (PSD)
A program under the Clean Air Act that ensures air quality is maintained and not degraded.
Maximum Achievable Control Technology (MACT)
Standards for hazardous air pollutants that represent the maximum degree of reduction achievable.
Hazardous Air Pollutants (HAPs)
Toxins defined by the Clean Air Act that may cause serious health effects.
1980 Superfund Act (CERCLA)
Legislation aimed at cleaning up sites contaminated with hazardous substances.
Law of Conservation of Mass
The principle stating that mass in an isolated system is conserved; it cannot be created or destroyed.
Flow Rate (Q)
The volume of fluid that passes a point per unit time, typically expressed in volume/time.
Steady State
A condition where the input and output rates of a system are constant over time.
