Scientific Methods
A systematic method to explore natural phenomena using testable, falsifiable hypotheses.
Hypothesis
A testable statement that can be proven false.
Independent Variable
The variable that is manipulated in an experiment.
Dependent Variable
The variable that is measured in an experiment.
Control Group
A baseline group used for comparison in an experiment.
Compound Light Microscope
A microscope used for viewing thin, transparent specimens.
Total Magnification
multiply the magnification of the ocular lens and the objective lens.
Depth of Field
The thickness of the specimen that is in focus at one time when viewed through a microscope.
Wicking
A technique to introduce solutions without lifting the cover slip.
Field of View
The extent of the observable area seen through the microscope.
Limitations of Scientific Methods
Scientific methods cannot test supernatural or moral claims and must be measurable and objective.
Replication
The process of repeating trials in an experiment to verify results.
Working Distance
The space between the objective lens and the specimen.
Ocular Lens
The lens you look through in a microscope.
