Nature vs. Nurture
Nature refers to traits inherent in the infant at birth, while nurture involves the influence of external events such as parenting and culture.
Cephalocaudal development
The growth pattern that proceeds from head to toe, meaning development occurs from the top down.
Proximodistal development
The growth pattern that develops from the center of the body outwards, from near to far.
Sigmund Freud's Psychosexual Stages
Five stages of development: Oral (birth-1 year), Anal (1-3 years), Phallic (3-6 years), Latency (6-11 years), Genital (adolescence).
Trust vs. Mistrust
Erik Erikson's first stage of psychosocial development where infants learn to trust caregivers for their needs.
Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt
Erik Erikson's second stage of psychosocial development where toddlers learn to exercise independence.
Sensorimotor stage
Piaget's first stage of cognitive development from birth to age 2, characterized by motor activity without the use of symbols.
Social Learning Theory
Bandura's theory that emphasizes learning through observation, imitation, and modeling.
Kohlberg's Stages of Moral Development
Three levels of moral development: Preconventional, Conventional, and Postconventional.
Moro reflex
A newborn reflex where infants respond to a sudden stimulus with a startle response.
Anticipatory guidance
Advice provided to parents about what to expect developmentally and how to promote health in their children.
