What makes a good nucleophile?
1) negative charge
2) low EN
3) bigger atom
4) polar protic —> Nu increases down; polar aprotic Nu increases up
5) less bulky
What makes a good leaving good?
1) weak base
2) conjugate of strong acid
3) weaker base than the nucleophile/base
If you have a bad leaving good, what can you do?
convert it into their conjugate acid through addition of a strong acid (or Lewis acid)
What reaction mechanism does polar aprotic solvents favor?
SN2
