Sensory neurons
Transmit sensory information for receptors to the spinal cord and brain
Motor neurons
Transmit motor information from the brain and spinal cord to muscles and glands
Internerons
Found between other neurons and send signals directly to muscles
Central nervous system (CNS)
Compose of the brain in spinal cord
Peripheral nervous system
Made up of nerve tissue and fibers outside of the brain and spinal cord; include spinal and cranial nerves
Somatic nervous system
A subdivision of the PNS which consist of sensory and motor neurons distributed throughout the skin, joints and muscles; transmits information toward the CNS
Autonomic Nervous System
A subdivision of the PNS system which regulates heartbeat, respiration digestion, and glandular secretions
Parasympathetic nervous system
Associated with resting and sleeping states and asked to reduce heart rate and constrict the bronchi; main role used to conserve energy
Sympathetic nervous system
A subdivision of the autonomic nervous system; activated by stress, common symptoms induced increased heart rest, blood glucose concentration, relaxed bronchi, decreased digestion etc.
