How are embryos produced by IVF screened?

Cells are harvested from embryo and genes are analysed

or can take from cells in amniotic fluid or placenta

Advantages of screening

• stops child suffering in the long run

• treatment costs NHS money after child is born

• laws prevent choosing characteristics such as eye colour

Concerns over screening

• implies people with genetic disorders are undesirable

• expensive

• healthy foetus may be miscarried
