What does SEL stand for and what is the process?
Stands for Social and Emotional Learning; it is the process through which people acquire knowledge, skills, and attitudes to understand themselves, relate to others, achieve goals, and support communities.
What are the five CASEL competencies?
Self-awareness, Self-management, Social awareness, Relationship skills, and Responsible decision-making.
What is self-awareness in SEL?
Understanding one’s thoughts, feelings, beliefs, culture, and how these influence behavior and sense of capability.
What is self-management in SEL?
The ability to regulate emotions, thoughts, and actions to achieve goals, cope with stress, persevere, and take positive action.
What is social awareness in SEL?
Understanding others, taking different perspectives, empathizing with diverse people, and recognizing how norms and systems influence belonging.
What are relationship skills in SEL?
How we connect with others, communicate clearly, solve problems, manage conflict, stand up for ourselves and others’ rights, and form lasting friendships.
What is responsible decision-making in SEL?
Thinking critically about consequences, considering impact on self and others, and identifying solutions that support collective well-being.
Why is environment important to SEL?
Environment influences SEL development, requiring collaboration among classrooms, schools, families, and communities.
How can SEL be taught in the classroom?
Clearly stated teaching leaves no room for confusion or doubt about SEL skills. Practicing them in core subjects by discussing perspectives or collaborative problem solving supported by evidence-based programs and trusting relationships where students are partners.

School-wide practices including how students are greeted, how discipline is carried out, and adults modeling positive relationships and SEL competencies.
