What group are the alkali metals? 6.1
Group 1.
List some physical properties of the alkali metals. 6.2
They are good conductors of heat and electricity and they are shiny- like most metals but they are also soft and have low boiling points - unlike most metals.
What happens when alkali metals react with water? 6.3
It produces an alkaline metal hydroxide and hydrogen e.g sodium + water goes to make sodium hydroxide + hydrogen.
How does the reactivity of the alkali metals change down the group? 6.4
Lithium fizzes steadily, sodium melts into a ball from the heat released in the reaction and fizzes rapidly, potassium gives off flames and the hydrogen produced burns its a lilac coloured flame.
Describe the reaction for lithium, sodium and potassium. 6.4
Lithium fizzes steadily, sodium melts into a ball from the heat released in the reaction and fizzes rapidly, potassium gives off flames and the hydrogen produced burns its a lilac coloured flame.
What is the density and storage of lithium, sodium and potassium? 6.5
They are less dense than water so they float and they are all stored in oil to keep air and water away.
Describe the reactivity of group one elements. 6.4
They all have one electron in their outer shells, they lose this when a reaction takes place to form ions with a 1+ charge. The more easily the outer electron is lost, the more reactive the metal.
What also increases going down the group? 6.5
Number of occupied shells.
Describe what takes place in the electronic configuration when a reaction takes place. 6.5.
The inner shells shield the outer electron, which reduces the reaction for the nucleus.
