Gen. John "Black Jack" Pershing-General of the Armies John "Black Jack" Pershing

was a highly accomplished American military leader known for commanding the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) in World War I. He was nicknamed "Black Jack" after his service commanding African-American troops, or "Buffalo Soldiers," in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, though the term was originally used by cadets who found him a strict instructor. Pershing was a mentor to the next generation of generals and was the only person besides George Washington to achieve the rank of General of the Armies.
