Microbial growth
An increase in the number of cells in a population
How does bacteria reproduce?
Bacteria reproduces through binary fission. In ideal conditions, this can occur every 20 minutes.
Stationery phase
Bacteria have max population due to available conditions.
Conditions for bacterial growth
Temperature, pH, water content, nutrients and removal of wastes.
Condition 1: Temperature
Different bacteria are suited to different optimum temperatures
Condition 2: pH
Different bacteria are suited to different acidic conditions. Some bacteria may like alkaline conditions, some may like acidic and some may like neutral.
Condition 3: water content
microbes obtain all nutrients from water in the surrounding environment
microbes usually grow in media that are nearly all water (98%)
Condition 4: nutrients
nutrients are requires for reactions in the cell.
microbes are considered dead when they have lost their ability to reproduce.
Condition 5: removal of wastes
microbes generate waste products from reactions within the cell.
accumulation of waste can inhibit growth of a microbe.
waste can include carbon dioxide, excess water, sulfur etc
