Adverb

Describes a verb - shows how, when, where, why smoothly/carefully and to what extent.

Metaphor

Gives a comparison/new way of viewing something.

Pronouns

Depends on which type of pronoun is used. Personal pronouns, for instance, makes the message more personal.

Allusion

Without mentioning something explicitly. Shows understanding of something else outside the sphere of discussion.

Simile

Gives a comparison/a new way of viewing something. Uses like or as.

Hyperbole

Exaggerates to make things seem more extreme than they are.

Intensifier

Illustrates stength of emotion.

Jargon

Complex language used by experts in a certain field. Can show expertise/can alienate.

Strong Modal auxiliary verb

Show possibility, intent, ability or necessity. Gives strength to a verb.

Simple sentence

Made up of one independent clause. Abrupt/creates pace/straightforward

Compound sentence

Connects two independent clauses with a coordinating conjunction. Allows addition of extra information.

Emotive language

Allows the reader to connect on an emotional level.

Passive voice

The object becomes the subject so emphasis is on something else.

Minor sentence

Fragmented/incomplete sentence. Abrupt/creates pace/fragments a text.

Complex sentence

Contains an independent clause and one or more subordinate clauses. Adds extra information and detail.

Vocative term

Address directly. Allows insight in a relationship between characters.

Stream of consciousness

Allows insight into the character's inner thoughts.

Semantic field

Collection of words related to each other / similar meaning or abstract idea. Unites imagery within a text.

Anecdote

Gives a sense of voice/illustrates through a story.

Monosyllabic word

One syllable word. Adds pace/abruptness/simplicity.

Symbolism

Figurative representations. Adds an extra dimension to understanding.

Personification

Attributing human characteristics to inanimate/non-human objects. Adds an extra dimension to descriptions.

Sibilance

Repetition of 's' sound. Enhances the mood / evokes emotion e.g. tension.

Triplet

Rule of three-Draws attention/adds a lyrical quality.

Rhetorical question

A question for dramatic effect or to make a point. Makes the audience consider an idea.

Parenthesis

Allows addition of extra information/Can be a digression.

Superlative

Expresses extreme. Uses of brackets, commas or dashes.

Absolute

Shows the extent of something.

Connotation

Implicit meaning. Allows readers to bring their own understanding to a text.

Preposition

Expressing a relation to another word. Shows positioning.

Imperative

Command. Presents an authoritative voice/Can sound bossy or demanding.

Abstract nouns

Noun denoting an idea, quality or state. Creates an emotional link.

Euphemism

Prevents shocking a reader. Polite and thoughtful or evading the subject.

Cliché

Shows lack of creative thought/presents an idea that all are familiar with.

Active voice

Subject performing the action. Bring the subject to the fore.
