What muscles perform neck flexion?
Sternocleidomastoid and scalenes
What muscles perform neck extension?
Splenius capitis, splenius cervicis, and erector spinae group
What muscles perform neck lateral flexion?
Sternocleidomastoid (same), scalenes (same), splenius capitis (same), and splenius cervicis (same)
What muscles perform trunk rotation?
External oblique (opposite) and internal oblique (same)
What muscles perform trunk lateral flexion?
Erector spinae group (same), external oblique (same), internal oblique (same), and quadratus lumborum
What muscles perform trunk flexion?
Rectus abdominis, external oblique, and internal oblique
What muscle performs trunk extension?
Erector spinae group
Sternocleidomastoid
Origin: sternum and clavicle. Insertion: mastoid process. Action: Bilateral neck flexion. Unilateral neck lateral flexion to same side and rotation to opposite side
Scalene
Origin: transverse processes of cervical vertebrae. Insertion: first and second ribs. Action: Bilateral neck flexion. Unilateral lateral neck flexion to same side
Splenius Capitis
Origin: spinous processes of C7-T3. Insertion: lateral occipital bone/mastoid process. Action: Bilateral neck extension. Unilateral lateral flexion and rotation of neck to same side
Splenius Cervicis
Origin: spinous processes of T3-T6. Insertion: transverse processes of C1-C3. Action: Bilateral neck extension. Unilateral neck lateral flexion to same side
Erector Spinae Group
Origin: common tendon that attaches to the posterior surface of sacrum, iliac crest, and spinous processes of T11-L5. Insertion: various attachments at posterior ribs, spinous and transverse processes of C2-T8, and mastoid process. Action: Bilateral trunk extension. Unilateral trunk lateral flexion to same side
Rectus Abdominus
Origin: pubic crest. Insertion: xiphoid process and costal cartilage of 5-7 ribs. Action: trunk flexion
External Oblique
Origin: lateral surface of lower 8 ribs. Insertion: iliac crest, pubic tubercle, and linea alba. Action: Bilateral trunk flexion. Unilateral trunk rotation to opposite side
Internal Oblique
Origin: inguinal ligament, iliac crest, and common tendon. Insertion: 8-12 ribs and linea alba. Action: Bilateral trunk flexion. Unilateral trunk rotation to same side
Quadratus Lumborum
Origin: iliac crest. Insertion: 12th rib and transverse processes of L1-L5. Action: Trunk lateral flexion to same side
