Exam #3
Will include lots of taxon names and life cycles, scheduled for Tuesday, April 21.
Protists
All eukaryotes except for plants, animals, and fungi.
Archaeplastida
A clade defined by plastids derived from primary endosymbiosis, including red algae and green algae.
Glaucophytes
Rare, unicellular, freshwater ‘algae’ with chloroplasts containing a peptidoglycan layer.
Red Algae
Multicellular marine algae that contain chlorophyll a and phycoerythrin, giving them a red color.
Green Algae
Paraphyletic group that includes chlorophytes and charophytes; contains chlorophyll a and b.
Excavata
A clade defined by DNA sequence data; all members are unicellular and some have a feeding groove.
Diplomonads
A group within Excavata lacking plastids and having reduced mitochondria called mitosomes.
Parabasalids
A group within Excavata with reduced mitochondria called hydrogenosomes that function in anaerobic respiration.
Euglenozoa
A group within Excavata known for having flagellae with a crystalline rod; includes euglenids and kinetoplastids.
Diatoms
Unicellular stramenopiles protected by a silicon dioxide box, major primary producers in aquatic systems.
Apicomplexans
Obligate animal parasites that possess an apical complex to penetrate host cells, including Plasmodium and Toxoplasma.
Ciliates
Unicellular organisms that move with cilia and have both micronuclei and macronuclei.
Syngamy
The process of fusion of haploid genomes during fertilization.
Conjugation
A process in ciliates where two cells exchange micronuclei to create genetic diversity.
Rhizarians
A clade characterized by long, thin, threadlike pseudopodia and includes foraminiferans and radiolarians.
Unikonta
A diverse clade that includes organisms with a single flagellum; includes amoebozoans and opisthokonts.
Plasmodium
The parasite responsible for malaria, with a complex life cycle involving both mosquitoes and humans.
Toxoplasma
A parasite that affects the behavior of its hosts, with a life cycle involving cats and rats.
