Subjects
What place, thing, quality or person the sentence is about.
Casey, Lamp, Bakery, Cat, Dog
Simple Subject
Names 1 person. place, thing or quality.
Example:
Casey walks his pets.
Compound Subject
Names 2 or more people, places, things or qualities.
Example:
Casey & Lucky are playing outside in the backyard!
Implied Subject
A type of subject that is often used when expressing a command, instruction or request.
Example:
Can you go buy me some shampoo and conditioner?
Predicate
Expresses something about the subject (what the subject does or is).
Example:
Morgan attends carnivals often.
Simple Predicate
Has and uses 1 verb.
Examples:
Casey hates sparkling water.
Riley likes basketball.
Compound Predicate
Has or uses 2 or more verbs.
Examples:
Casey went to the gym & walked the dogs.
Ryan played video games and slept in his bed.
Phrase
A group of related words without a subject-predicate combination.
Examples:
Above the chair.
On the shelf
Near the sink.
Clause
A group of related words containing a subject-predicate combination.
Dependent Clause
A clause that does not express a complete idea. It leaves the reader "hanging" and thus does not stand alone as a sentence.
Examples:
Although I am very hungry for dinner……
Because they ran…….
Even though he ran 10 miles……
Independent Clause
A clause that expresses a complete idea and can stand alone as a sentence.
Examples
I went for a run outside.
I walked around Boston.
I played video games with my friends.
