Epipelagic zone ( photic zone )
Surface to 200 metres. Lots of light. Wide variation in temperature.
Mesopelagic zone
200 - 1000 metres deep. Greatest temperature change.
Bathypelagic zone
1000 - 4000 metres deep. Constant temperature and darkness.
Abyssopelagic zone
4000 - 6000 metres deep. Near freezing and pitch black. Intense pressure from depth.
How does temperature affect solubility ?
Higher salinity as salt dissolves at a faster rate. Molecules move faster, ions are mixed into water. Easy for water molecules to break ionic bonds and surround leftover ions.
Salinity def
Measure of the concentration of dissolved salts in seawater ( parts per thousand )
As temp of seawater increases density…
Decreases
Where is the concentration of dissolved oxygen highest
Top 100 metres
Low salinity levels cause dissolved oxygen levels to…
Rise
High atmospheric pressure leads to …. dissolved oxygen level
High
Dissolved oxygen levels are … by lower temperatures
Increased
Effects of warming oceans
Weather changes.
Frozen methane melting.
Organisms and population of ecosystem change ( food chains affected ).
Lower oxygen concentration.
Inhibit development of species due to disruption in cellular respiration.
Changes in migration patterns.
