Define Bacterial Culture
A method used to determine the type(s) of bacteria present in a sample.
Can a bacterial culture be aerobic and anaerobic?
Yes
What are 4 reasons that we would culture bacteria?
determine type(s)
Determine if bacteria is pathogenic
Determine appropriate Tx
Determine if patient is carrier
What is the gold standard for determining antibiotic Tx and ensuring resolution of infection?
Culture & Sensitivity
What are 3 mediums for m=bacteria growth we can use for an in clinic aerobic bacterial culture
agar plates
Liquid broth
Tubes w slant media
Non fastidious bacteria
bacteria that requires minimal nutrients for growth
Not fussy
Fastidious organisms
require supplemental components for growth
What temp should the incubator be at?
35-37
How many days to plates get monitored for?
3
What is a Sensitivity Test
A test that determines which antibiotics bacteria are sensitive to and resistant to.
What is Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC)
The lowest concentration of an antibiotic that would inhibit bacterial growth.
Bactericidal Antibiotic
An antibiotic that kills bacteria.
Bacteriostatic Antibiotic
An antibiotic that inhibits the growth or reproduction of bacteria.
Endogenous Bacteria
Microorganisms that are already living inside the body.
Exogenous Source
Bacteria that comes from outside the body.
Gram Stain
A method used to determine whether bacteria are gram-positive or gram-negative.
Cytocentesis
The gold standard for urine collection for a bacterial culture.
California Mastitis Test (C.M.T.)
A test performed when confirming mastitis that indicates positive results based on gel formation in milk after reagent addition.
Bronchoalveolar Lavage (BAL)
A procedure to obtain a sterile sample from the lower respiratory tract in suspected infections.
Catalase Test
A test used to distinguish between Staphylococcus spp. and Streptococcus spp. based on bubble formation in hydrogen peroxide.
Pasteurella Multocida
A gram-negative bacteria often associated with cat bites or abscesses.
Normal Flora
Microbial populations that normally inhabit certain areas of the body, such as the external ear.
Otitis Externa
An ear infection commonly found in dogs, often caused by gram-negative rods like Pseudomonas Aeruginosa.
Colony Features
Characteristics such as size, colour, shape, texture, elevation, and hemolysis used to describe an isolated colony grown on a culture medium.
