DAY 1 - Introduction into Poetry:

(Traditional) Poetry
Usually rhymes, written in verse (lines) with a regular rhythm. There is a rhyme scheme.
Experimental Poetry/Free Verse
Does away with regular meter and rhyme, but is usually still set up in lines. Poets communicate emotions, feelings and experiences. Says more but talks less with imagery, figurative language, rhythm and they sometimes rhyme. Word choice = important!
Imagery
Really descriptive language alluding to 5 senses.
DAY 2 - (Poetic) Forms:

Free Verse
Connects to when they really want to just write, no rules.
Lyric
Short, emotional poem.
Sonnet
14-line poem. Short, rhyming: ABABCDCDEFEFGG
2 TYPES:
English - Iambic Pentameter, 5 Iambs in a line
Shakespearean: 3 Quadrains (4-lined stanza), rhyming couplet
Italian/ Petrachan
14-lines
Octave - 1st 8 lines - introduces a problem/idea
Volta - Switch (lines 9-ish)
Sestet - last 6 lines - answers question/problem or reinforces an idea
Example: Rhyme Scheme
ABBACDDCEE.
Narrative
Tells a story - action, conflict, resolution.
Epic
Long and formal narrative. Poem written in an elevated style and recounts a hero of almost mythic proportions who embodies the traits of a nation of people.
Example: Odyssey
Ballad
A narrative composition in rhythms. Verse suitable for singing.
Note: Form emphasizes meaning!

Simile
Using like or as.
Metaphor

Idea/belief.
Personification
Giving human attributes to an inanimate object.
DAY 4 - Musical Devices

Musical Meaning In Devices
In choosing words, poets always consider the musical quality as well as meaning. Sound = reinforce meaning.
Refrain
Recurring line, stanza, phrase, or ballad within a poem, star changes!
Alliteration
Repetition of consonant sounds.
Assonance
Repetition of vowel
Angry Alligator Ate An Apple
Onomapatopeia
Sound imitates. Buzz, wham.
Rhyme Patterns:
Exact
Words that exactly repeat a sound.
Internal
Rhyme occurs with a line
Approximate/Slant
Rhymes in the final sounds. Are similar but not identical
Rhythm
Alternation between stressed and unstressed syllables in a line of poetry.
Meter
General pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables - iambic pentament -> example:
My love | is such | that riv | ers can | not quench
