Popes and Kings
Ruled Europe as spiritual and political leaders in the Middle Ages.
Pope
The head of the Christian Church in Western Europe.
Bull
A letter written by the pope to explain a religious teaching or outline a church policy.
Excommunicate
To cast out from the church; a punishment feared in the Middle Ages.
Holy Roman Empire
A kingdom that grew out of Charlemagne's empire and whose emperors were elected by the empire's nobles.
Pope Leo IX
Argued that because Saint Peter had been leader of the whole church, later popes should be as well.
Great Schism
The event in 1054 when Byzantine Patriarch Michael Cerularius refused to recognize the supremacy of the pope and was excommunicated.
Roman Catholics
Those who supported Pope Leo IX's authority.
Orthodox Church
Formed by those who agreed with the bishop of Constantinople.
Pope Gregory VII
Came to power in Rome in 1073 and clashed with Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV over the selection of bishops.
