Nelson Mandela 

  • In the 1940’s, younger and more extreme people joined the organization.

  • Mandela was a young lawyer 

  • In 1952, he helped in a campaign to break apartheid laws

  • Gained many followers

Sharpeville Massacre

  • March 21, 1960 – police shot and killed 69 people at a protest

  • TURNING POINT

  • ANC no longer “peaceful” 

  • Mandela goes to jail (25 plus years)….


And the ANC will fight against the government for MANY years!! Finally, the world starts to listen (restricts trade, etc)….

Resistance to Apartheid 

  • In the 1980s, there was international demand for an end to apartheid and Mandela’s release from prison

    • many countries refused to trade (economic sanctions)with South Africa 

    • massive protests and foreign pressure led to big changes in the South African government.

Big Changes 

  • S.A President F.W. de Klerk makes ANC legal and begins to end the Apartheid (1991)

  • Mandela is let out of jail…

  • S. A. holds 1st democratic elections and ANC wins with Mandela as the first black president of democratic South Africa (1994)
