Prokaryotic cells
no membrane bound organelles, no nucleus
Eukaryotic cells
membrane bound organelles
*Cytoskeleton
important for shape of the cell
suspends organelles into cytoplasm
*Nucleus
directs everything inside the cell (reproduction, regulation of cells activites, controls protein synthesis)
*Centrioles
made up of microtubules arranged in triplets
helps with cell division and cell motility
*Cilia & Flagella
only found in animal cells
move cell through fluid (cell movement) or move fluid over cell
*Mitochondria
Powerhouse of the cell (where ATP is made)
Cristae (the fold in the inner membrane)
Matrix (fluid inside the mitochondrian)
Ribosomes
‘protein factory’ makes proteins and assembles amino acids
Endoplasmic Reticulum
helps cells transport, aid protein synthesis if ribosomes are there (can’t make proteins by itself)
Golgi bodies
the cells main processing, packaging, and shipping center
Lysosomes (only in animal cells)
“suicide bags”
serves as a waste disposal system (breaking down macromolecules, old cell parts)
Plastids (plant cells only)
functions for photosynthesis carried out by chloroplasts to take energy from sun to make glucose
Vacuoles
storage of water, nutrients, waste, and pigments, as well as waste disposal and maintaining cell turgor pressure
