Glycolysis
The process that breaks down glucose into pyruvate, producing a net gain of 2 ATP.
Pyruvate Oxidation
The step where pyruvate is converted into Acetyl-CoA, producing NADH.
Krebs Cycle
A series of reactions in the mitochondria that produces NADH and FADH2 from Acetyl-CoA.
Electron Transport Chain (ETC)
A series of proteins in the inner mitochondrial membrane that transfers electrons and pumps H+ ions to create an electrochemical gradient.
Chemiosmosis
The process of using the electrochemical gradient to synthesize ATP via ATP synthase.
Oxidative Phosphorylation
The process that uses the electron transport chain and chemiosmosis to produce ATP.
Anaerobic Respiration
A form of respiration that occurs without oxygen, using alternative electron acceptors.
Fermentation
A process by which cells convert pyruvate into lactic acid or ethanol to regenerate NAD+ in the absence of oxygen.
ATP Synthase
An enzyme that synthesizes ATP from ADP and inorganic phosphate using the energy from H+ ions flowing through it.
Electrochemical Gradient
A gradient that generates potential energy by having a different concentration of ions on either side of a membrane.
