Niger Delta
Swampland in the south full of arable land and different ethnic groups. The main source of Nigeria’s oil, damaged by pollution and oil drilling
Sokoto Caliphate (1808)
First formal government in Nigeria, brought together different ethnic groups.
First Republic (1960)
First attempt at a n independent Nigerian government. Came immediately after Nigeria gained independence from the UK. It industrialized, increased export power, and began to drill for oil.
Federal Military Government
Government created against the First Republic, split Nigeria up into federal states and transitioned the economy into oil exports.
Federal Executive Council
President’s cabinet in Nigeria. President must appoint members from each state to avoid favoritism.
Federal Character Principle
Political standard that there has to be an even spread of ministers from each state in the FEC and the two houses of legislature. Keeps ethnic conflict somewhat at bay.
National Assembly
Bicamerial legislation, made up of the House and Senate. Historically functions as a rubber stamp.

Lower house of the National Assembly. 360 seats, SMD’s and 4 year terms

Upper house of the National Assembly. 109 seats with 3 seats per state, 4 year terms
